OSH-PIP faculty are acutely aware of the potential impact that COVID and related necessary precautions has on practica and internship-related training, as well as on the internship application and interview process. To this end, we have implemented a number of changes at Oregon State Hospital, hopefully temporary, in order to accommodate for the safety of our interns and applicants. Also, some changes to the internship structure have organically occurred within the past few months as a direct result of the changing hospital climate. Please know that we firmly approach this process from the perspective of prioritizing training needs and interests over those of the hospital. Moving forward, we will endeavor to keep applicants as up to date as possible regarding changes to OSH-PIP procedure and training. Please keep an eye on this page for the most up to date information:
Application & Interview Procedures for the 2021-2022 cohort
- Historically OSH has set a requirement that applicants obtain at least 500 intervention hours and 75 assessment hours by the time of application.
- For the coming application round (Fall 2020) we are loosening this expectation, consistent with APPIC recommendations; specifically, OSH-PIP will consider applicants with fewer hours based on goodness of fit, as long as all other requirements are met.
- Consistent with APPIC recommendations, all interviews will be carried out remotely/virtually for this upcoming round of applicants. In-person interviews will not be taking place, even for applicants who reside nearby.
- Traditionally, OSH-PIP has been a 2000-hour internship. Consistent with APPIC recommendations, this requirement has been loosened with the current expectation being that interns complete at least the minimum number of hours required for licensure in Oregon (1500 hours) or in any state they wish to become licensed following internship.
- 25% of interns’ hours are still expected to be in the form of direct client contact, consistent with APPIC and Oregon licensing board requirements.
Format of Training & Treatment Delivery at OSH
- Interns are able to phone or Skype into group training activities such as group supervision and didactic seminars. We take the interns’ lead on whether they prefer to carry out these small group activities remotely or in person; when in person is preferred, care is taken to reserve large conference rooms to maximize physical distancing.
- Interns and other clinicians are able to phone or Skype into meetings regularly, both at the unit and departmental levels. This includes patient treatment planning meetings as well as other hearings.
- Direct patient interventions by interns and other clinicians are largely carried out in person as Oregon state administrators have not approved the use of telehealth for individual intervention and assessment tasks. In doing so, the wearing of masks is required and interns are strongly encouraged to utilize consultation rooms which allow for maximum physical distancing.
- Interns are encouraged to telework as they are comfortable when not carrying our direct patient intervention. Each intern has been given remote desktop access so they are able to remotely and securely access everything needed for carrying out support work.
- Due to the vulnerable nature of our geriatric population, Geropsychology will be available as a minor rotation only
- Due to the initial impact of COVID-19, Incompetent to Proceed admissions were halted for several weeks, creating a lengthy backlog. In order to resume those admissions, the hospital had to convert multiple admissions units to focus on the Incompetent to Proceed population specifically. Patients are largely kept on admissions units only for a brief period of quarantine prior to immediate transfer to step-down units in order to make room for additional admissions. With these changes, interns assigned to the Incompetent to Proceed and Guilty Except for Insanity rotations (which have traditionally taken place most often in the admissions area) are largely being placed on step-down units rather than admissions units at present.
OSH-PIP Program Structure
OSH-PIP offers a one-year, full-time internship beginning August 15 of each year. The training program is located on the Salem campus of Oregon State Hospital.

Oregon State Hospital Overview
Oregon State Hospital is the state's primary state-run psychiatric facility for adults. The state hospital delivers high-quality inpatient psychiatric and medical care to patients through Forensic Psychiatric Services for patients who are judged Guilty Except for Insanity or Incompetent to Proceed to court, as well as Psychiatric Recovery Services for civilly committed patients.
OSH-PIP submitted their first self-study in December 2015 and their first site visit occurred on August 16 and 17, 2016. On November 15, 2016, OSH-PIP was awarded “accredited, on contingency” status by the American Psychological Association, Commission on Accreditation with an initial date of accreditation of August 17, 2016, which is applicable to all internship classes beginning with the 2015-2016 cohort. In November 2018, APA awarded OSH-PIP full APA accreditation. Our next accreditation site visit will be in 2021.
